Helping me to acheive my dream

My dream is to get in shape and to run a sprint tri. I have that as a goal, but work and other pressures always get in my way. The book Put Your Dreams to the Test, by John Maxwell, helps you to visualize your dream and to make concrete steps to acheive it. I admit that I have done the whole program yet, but I am off to a good start and think the questions in this book will help me to acheive my dream in time.

Book Review: Max on Life

I still need motivation to get it better shape, but summer got away and I still need to do better. This book was helpful to me as I pondered some of life's big questions: Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does God let bad things happen at all? While I found reading it cover to cover a bit tedious, the answers that the author provided to the questions were useful and, as always, he provides the spiritual references to back it up. All in all, it was a book I might use as a reference, but not as an entertaining read.

The Journey Begins

So...I really am going to try to get a sprint triathlon done in 2011 and to blog on my progress. I want to do this and always felt like I was too fat/too old/not athletic enough...you name the excuse and I created it.

My goal is to run the Tri to Beat Cancer Triathlon in Athens, GA on August 21, 2011. I have not yet gone public with this goal, but when I do I hope that people will donate money to the Cancer Foundation of NE Georgia in my honor. This is a sprint tri...400 meter lake swim, 16 mile bike and 5K run. I can swim OK--just need to train more. Biking is OK - if I can get a BIKE! (Mine rusted and I need to replace it...) and the run will not kill me...it will just make me stronger - I hope! I have never been a runner and the hills in GA may get to me. Total time for the tri is 2:45...with training I hope to be able to meet this.

But, here is the problem. I am definitely a Clydesdale (200+) and always will be. Unfortunately...I am also at my heaviest weight ever. I don't want to share that number yet, but if I can lose some of it then I will. So...my goals are as follows:

1. Lose 10 lbs by the end of Jan 2011 thru weights and aerobic exercise. Of course, diet will be part of this as well.

2. Lose 20 lbs by the end of Feb 2011 and 30 lbs by the end of Mar 2011.

That would give me April - July to train and August to fine tune for the race...are those appropriate goals?

So, what did I do today. Well...I went to gym this morning and did upper body weights (pecs, lat pulldown, biceps curls and triceps extensions) followed by 30 mins on the treadmill with intermittent 30 sec runs followed by 1.5 minutes of walking. Did OK, but need to remember a water bottle tomorrow. That will be the real test...can I get up at 5 AM to work out 5 days a week.

When I finally get brave enought to go public with my goal...I need suggestions for music downloads for the training and also need apps/other ways to moniter my food intake and exercise routine.

Please...let this be the first day of my training to be a Clydesdale. And when I finish...I may not pull the Budwiser wagon, but I may take a can off of it :-) Until tomorrow...
